Learning perspective drawing online

Do you feel confident about your perspective drawing skills?

Since the pandemic, we have been offering live online perspective drawing classes via Zoom and we love it! It is true that they are more challenging than the usual in-person classes because of the need to conquer distance and technology. But, we managed to make this art course very enjoyable; participants learned a lot, and we all made new friends.

Some of you may say; “but I know perspective!” Of course! Most of you know perspective first by intuition and then through your lifetime readings here and there. But, honestly, do you really understand it? Meaning, as an observer within the landscape, can you feel, analyze, and understand every object that inhabits it? Can you determine the exact proportions of each of the objects in relation to “you”, without using a measuring tape?

This is what we are going to address during our 8-class (16 hours) live virtual perspective drawing course.

We start from scratch, meaning from “you”, the observer in the field, in plein-air; and then we move up, to the objects you are looking at. Then, we proceed with the basic “rules” that you will have to blindly follow. Darth Vader may be whispering in your brain, resulting in creating new vanishing points that should NOT be there! Never, never listen to him. Just follow the rules! We will also tackle the notion of dimensions: the exact width of the road, the height of the pine trees, the distance between the fence posts, and so on. I will be giving “drawing dictations” as homework.

If everyone understands the concepts, rest assured that all the drawings will be identical. All the angles resulting from our dictation will be the same for everyone. The road will be exactly 12 feet wide, the telephone post exactly 30 feet high; the small plane in which the observer is in will be flying exactly 155 feet above the ground.

The secret to success is to attend every class; do your weekly homework and send it back for corrections. I assure you that perspective will not bear any more secrets. My way of teaching perspective drawing is unique. For a long time, I have been looking for a book that explains perspective the way I do. But I have not found it yet, so I think I will write it.

Gray a Philosophical “Color”

I had to know if NFT art is and will be a fad or not. In Canada’s national capital (Ottawa) art world, I kept hearing that it is not going to last, it’s all smoke and mirrors, ya-ya-ya, etc. So, I entered the Palazzo Strozzi with an open mind. I saw the works, I read everything on the walls, and I came out of the exhibition thinking “It is here to stay.” From that moment, on la Via de’ Tomabuoni, I felt compelled as an art historian and art educator to embrace this new reality. Can we talk about the neuroscience of art? This is the question that French neurobiologist Jean-Pierre Changeux addresses in his beautiful book The Beauty in the Brain or La Beauté dans le Cerveau (Odile Jacob, 2016). Prof. Changeux describes how the human brain behaves when making or contemplating a work of art. To make a long story short, he argues that the neural bases of aesthetic pleasure are the product of the link between cognitive and emotional brain functions, in other words, the harmony between reason and emotion. Moreover, he gives some tips on how artists can maximize the impact of their works on their audience.
