Our upcoming painting workshops in Tuscany and Provence June & July 2014

During the last few weeks, I hired four astounding professors from various universities to work on the following question: “What is beautiful”? Their answers will be available shortly in the form of short presentations on Vimeo. The vivacious Prof. Édith-Anne Pageot from the University of Ottawa, concentrated her talk on the passage from the 19^th to the 20^th century with the recent discoveries and theories in colours, which undoubtedly changed the course of aesthetics. Chevreul, Blanc, Goethe, etc. come to our mind.

Before Monet, artists preferred and promoted the juxtaposition of tones of the same value (gray values or ochre in particular). According to the proponents of classical aesthetics (such as the Barbizon School painters) it would have been distasteful to juxtapose contrasting colors or opposite colors, which we will be promoting during our next painting workshops in Tuscany and Provence. In less than a century in Europe, violent color contrasts would be in tune with political revolutions and the destruction of religious and societal values.

Mentalities change. In less than 50 years the use of complementary colors became harmonious and was promoted by modern painters, one of them, the Dutch landscape artist Leo Gestel. These news values would also bring forth the abstraction by Kandinsky and Mondrian and new ways in tackling the landscape in a more modern way, what we are going to do in Italy.

New values were established and more time was devoted for a deep and serious re-evaluation of the terrestrial environment. Don’t you think that today, in this environmental crisis, we shall do the same? In a few weeks, during our art workshops in Italy and later in France, we will be in the same reflective mode. Are we ready to change, to evolve?

Gray a Philosophical “Color”

“Over the past 40 years, I’ve seen students in the process of transitioning from saturated colors to grayed ones, a sign of serious questioning about painting. As a beginner, we shy away from mixing colors, and the more we progress in our creative practice, the more daring we become. That’s life! I had to know if NFT art is and will be a fad or not. In Canada’s national capital (Ottawa) art world, I kept hearing that it is not going to last, it’s all smoke and mirrors, ya-ya-ya, etc. So, I entered the Palazzo Strozzi with an open mind. I saw the works, I read everything on the walls, and I came out of the exhibition thinking “It is here to stay.” From that moment, on la Via de’ Tomabuoni, I felt compelled as an art historian and art educator to embrace this new reality. Didn’t we do it for Pop Art and Conceptual Art in the late ’50s and ‘60s?

Can we talk about the neuroscience of art? This is the question that French neurobiologist Jean-Pierre Changeux addresses in his beautiful book The Beauty in the Brain or La Beauté dans le Cerveau (Odile Jacob, 2016). Prof. Changeux describes how the human brain behaves when making or contemplating a work of art. To make a long story short, he argues that the neural bases of aesthetic pleasure are the product of the link between cognitive and emotional brain functions, in other words, the harmony between reason and emotion. Moreover, he gives some tips on how artists can maximize the impact of their works on their audience.
